What’s on locally (for free) during the Olympics?

It’s not that easy to find information about all the cultural, free events in the local area. Here’s some that I’ve found:-

5th August Godiva Awakes (well publicised in free paper).

12th August: Sacrilege, the life-sized inflatable replica of Stonehenge for people to bounce on by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller is at Waterworks Nature Reserve, Lammas Road, London E10 7QB on 12 Aug 2012 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

9th September: The Bandstand Marathon brings communities together through live music performances all at the same time, on the same day. This year, the challenge is to run 500 events nationwide. 09 Sep 2012 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM Springfield Park E5 9EF

Frieze Projects East: running up to 26 Aug 2012. A series of new contemporary art commissions in East London’s public spaces. http://friezefoundation.org/projects-east

Some photos from the 2012 party

Here’s just a few photos from this years event. I didn’t manage to get any of the mayor turning up, putting on glow-stick specs and selecting the first raffle winner – did that really happen!?

We hope everyone had a great time; we were SO lucky with the weather. Please drop off any photos you took (by email, or on CD / USB stick to 79) and I’ll upload a full gallery. We’ll put more news about how much we raised etc later in the week.

Street Party Update July 19th 2012

Bake Off.
Here’s a sneak preview of the Cake Competition trophy.

Bake Off Trophy 2012

Raffle.
Charmaine says she’ll be round to collect any more raffle prize donations on Friday night, but if you don’t see her you can also bring out donated prizes on the day.

Marquee.
We haven’t managed to arrange the long table we normally use for everyone to to share their food this year. Please can people bring out any garden tables they think could be used for this purpose.

Cliff’s already out building the marquee frame. Pop out and give him a hand if you can. Most important – if at all possible come out in the morning on Saturday to help get the covers over the frame.

5th Annual Summer Street Party 2012 Final Newsletter

Elmfield Road Street Party July 21st 2012 1pm to 11pm

July 12th: The final newsletter.

MARQUEE/SHELTER: This weekend (14th-15th) Cliff Is going to be out on the green from mid-day Saturday or Sunday (depending on the weather) working on strengthening the marquee covers. Please come out and help if you’re around. He’ll start building the frame for the Marquee from Thursday 19th onwards and could probably do with some help then as well.

ROAD CLOSURE: Don’t forget the road will be closed to through traffic on Saturday 21st from midday to 11pm. Also, if you can move your cars away from the central part of the street by midday on the 21st it will help keep the road clear and safe for everyone,

TABLES & CHAIRS: So far we’ve worked out we’ll be using the funding (see previous newsletter) to help cover the cost of the marquee materials, lighting, gazebos for extra shelter, plastic tables (to set out the cake competition and raffle prizes), marquee decorations and payments for the bands. There’s not enough to hire tables and chairs so please bring out any spare garden/camping tables and chairs on the day so people can sit and enjoy the event.  We’ll provide labels to help make sure you are reunited with your furniture afterwards.

FOOD & DRINK: As usual, there will be long tables in the marquee for people to use to share food and drink. Bring out whatever you can share.

RAFFLE: Charmaine, Cliff and David will begin calling door-to-door for any raffle prize donations you might have from Sunday evening onwards (please don’t worry if you can’t donate). We’ll be selling raffle tickets on the day at 50p per ticket or £2.00 per strip of 5. Even with the extra funding this year we’ll heavily rely on money raised in the raffle to cover costs.

CAKE COMPETITION: Please bring out your entries for the Bake Off by 3pm. It’s free to enter, it’s nothing too serious and you could win a fantastic trophy. Cakes will be judged anonymously and the winner announced at around 8pm.

FANCY DRESS: The fancy dress theme is Walthamstow / East London with judging at around 6pm for kids and around 8pm for adults. Winners receive £20.00 Love To Shop vouchers.

LIVE MUSIC:Bands should be playing at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm (depending on weather).

The FINAL planning meeting will be held on Tuesday 17th July at 7.30pm in the Coppermill.

The 5th anniversary event will go ahead whatever the weather throws at us! Come out to help decorate the street and the marquee from midday onwards on the 21st.

Let’s all have a fantastic party
